Penley Pony Stud was founded in 1973 at Jerramungup, north east of Albany and in 1984 relocated to Walkaway, south of Geraldton. With the goal to breeding ponies for children to enjoy in any equestrian discipline, the stud purchased mares with correct conformation, smooth movement and exceptional temperaments. The foundation sire was the Welsh A colt Parattah Old Custom (Nattai Suncloud x Criban Old Fashion (imp) , a daughter of the famous mare Criban Old Gold). With the desire to breed taller ponies for riding, the young Welsh B colt, Nattai Admiral (Rotherwood Commander (imp) x Nattai Seren) was purchased from Nattai Stud. Admiral proved to be an asset to the stud as he passed on his true welsh conformation, forward movement and a temperament well beyond the ponies years!

Many of Admiral's fillies were retained to become the main bloodlines for the stud, so the search began for a new sire. Kira Fair Impressions (Kirreway Playfair x Naomi Valley Golden Dawn) was leased for a season as the stud waited for the new Welsh B colt Trentlyn Aramis (Downland Warrior (imp) x Weston Antonia (imp)) to come of age. Aramis was purchased by Woranora Pony Stud in NSW after a couple of seasons. The stud was very fortunate to be offered a lease of Weston Park Cockade (Weston Cottonwood x Weston Charmaine) , as it provided an opportunity to introduce the outstanding Weston bloodlines. The combination of this bloodline and Admiral's daughters proved to be a great success, with many fillies being retained and the exceptional stallion Penley Naturalist being produced.

The awesome Welsh Cob stallion Wingana Parc Gaffer (Brenin Pur (imp) x Synod Gay Girl (imp)) came to the stud to retire in a big paddock. The opportunity was too good to pass up and a few mares ran in his retirement paddock with him! One of his lovely daughters has been retained.

Wendamar Nexus (Derralea Hero x Wendamar Nicety) was purchased as a foal, as he combined both the Downland and Weston bloodlines. This again proved to be a very successful purchase, with many outstanding ponies being bred and some exceptional fillies retained. In the meantime, Admiral produced a beautiful palomino colt out of a leased Walyunga mare. Fortunately, Penley Zest cheated death as a very little foal and proved to be an asset to the stud.  He is producing ponies with correct conformation and exceptional movement.  His progeny will be out under saddle towards the end of 2010.

With the passing on of the two old greats, Admiral and Gaffer, and the sale of Nexus, Penley Pony Stud is now running two homebred dilute colour Welsh B stallions and 18 homebred Welsh B mares and fillies and one Arabian mare.  In 2006, in partnership with Penrhys Pony Stud, Evans Royalist (Kenwood Royal Charter x Mortons Camila) was purchased from Mt Dragon Welsh Pony Stud in America and imported to Australia in 2007.  Royalist brings to the stud true welsh character and type, exceptional movement and conformation and the ultimate temperament for breeding ponies for children. Royalist's first 4 foal foals were born in 2009 and have fulfilled the goal of breeding ponies that are not only beautiful and athletic but that have exceptional temperaments!
